5 Ways to Ensure a Memorable Summer

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

summerIt’s July and the heat index is rising. Here in Houston, we’re looking at 100+ degrees and lots of humidity. Pool time and ocean beaches. I love it! Add a tall glass of cold lemonade or an iced tea, and I’m ready for some serious summer activities.

But sometimes the heat drags us down, and that’s when we could use a few tips on how to ensure come fall we have lots of wonderful stories to tell.

We treasure all June, July, and August have to offer from kids and grandkids visits, amusement parks, fresh veggies and fruits, and on to the smell of barbecue. Should I mention vacations, family reunions, green lawns, and flowers bursting through the earth? All memory makers.

Here are a few tips that work for me when I want to savor this special time of the year and not miss a minute of fun.

1. Laugh like never before. If ever there was a fountain of youth, it’s the sweet nectar of summer. Be a kid again. Climb a tree. Pick dandelions. Go fishing.

2. Embrace the sunshine. Vitamin D is good for the body and soul. Yes, we need sunscreen. But for just a few moments, close your eyes and lift your face to the sky. Definitely a kiss from heaven.

country road3. Take a road trip through the country. How high is the corn? Watch a field of cows graze and flick off the pesky flies with their tails. Roll down your window and take in the fresh smells. (I will admit fresh manure may not be pleasing.)

4. List what you haven’t done yet this summer and schedule them on your calendar. Plan it. Make it happen.

5. Take lots of pictures. Come winter when the chilling winds bring ice and snow, reviewing the photos of summer will warm your soul.

In closing, I’d like to share a quote with you from Darrell Hammond. “Aaah, summer – that long anticipated stretch of lazy, lingering days, free of responsibility and rife with possibility. It’s a time to hunt for insects, master handstands, practice swimming strokes, conquer trees, explore nooks and crannies, and make new friends.

What is your favorite part of summer?
