10 Ways to Explore Your Creativity

By DiAnn Mills @DiAnnMills

Every person on the planet is creative. We’re all born with gifts and talents. These are unique to who we are and how we can use them to better serve the world. Too many people believe they aren’t creative when, in truth, our creativity is begging to be explored. We don’t have to be eccentric, bizarre, weird, or flighty. All we have to be is ourselves and let our ideas take form.

The following are 10 ways to prove you are creative.

  1. What are you passionate about? The word passion comes from the Greek verb meaning to suffer, and it refers to a person or a thing. Think about who you are and what motivates you to action.
  2. Consider your occupation. If it’s being a mom, you have unique ways of nurturing those you love. If you’re a teacher, nurse, lawyer, or president of your own company, you use your imagination to be a success.
  3. How do you spend your spare time? In today’s world, leisure time comes at a premium. How we plan and enjoy free moments is resourceful.
  4. Are you sports-minded? Whether it’s board games, tennis, bowling, or a rousing game of football, strategy feeds into your competitive nature. Friends, that’s called creativity.
  5. Do you have a reading preference? When people dive into a nonfiction book or novel, their imagination takes over. Words become images. New worlds are discovered. Adventure breaks onto the written page.
  6. Are you an excited eater or a picky partaker?  Either way, the person who sits down to a meal has distinct means of choosing which foods to eat and how they will be enjoyed or tolerated.
  7. The dynamics of dreams prove the power of the creative mind. Without the barriers of time and place, our subconscious is free to journey to worlds unknown.
  8. Communication involves a mix of ideas, intellect, emotion, and process. We communicate to those we love, respect, don’t care for, and those foreign to our culture and socio-economic levels. How we express our words indicates vision and thought.
  9. We all clothe ourselves with different colors and styles. We choose the items we plan to wear based on our individual tastes, budget, and occasion. Open up your closet and select your favorite outfit.
  10. Worship involves an attitude of the heart. We are inspired to praise God as we know Him, according to our personality and how we view His work in our lives. Some people are reserved while others raise their hands. Some appear unemotional while others weep.
You are filled with new and innovative ideas. Fill in the blank: I am creative when I _________________. Don’t be shy.  Comment below. We want to hear!

My go to when I need to relax is reading. Reading settles me and gives my brain a rest while it absorbs the story. It’s the great escape. But to answer the questions of being creative, I need to let myself forget the day to day worries and let my mind and hand create without thought. That’s really not as deep as it sounds. I tend to wrap my head around all the things I’m expected to do and need to do and I forget that I need to let my child out to create. It’s hard to let go of the expectations I hold. I enjoy doodling, painting, and some free style poetry. I just need to learn to let it flow instead of putting it on the back burner for another time. I’m still learning how to do that, It’s a process.

Every day is full of creativity for each of us. The obvious is cooking, decorating, writing…all artistic and yet I think there is more. I am creative when I try to figure out how to juggle all the tasks that fall on my plate,; that requires major creativity. Problem solving requires creative thinking, like when I figure out how to get medical equipment for friends and family in need. I am creative when I work through financial issues with others who are drowning under the weight of bills. Every day is one massive creative marathon. Thank God for His ideas and intervention in our lives. He is so faithful and the ideas are all His.

    Hi DiAnn
Some consider me quiet, but I come alive when I converse, and I love doing so through writing. A million conversations and ideas in my mind, request a voice, and listeners. It takes discipline, and often, discouragement sets in. But my desire to write is like trying to keep a Labrador puppy sitting in one place, quiet for any length of time.
Another area of creativity for me, is cooking. I like to read recipe books. I also like to take whatever is available, meat or vegetables, or pasta. Introduce them to some herbs, or spice, put them through the heat, (maybe) and deliver some pleasure. God still creates, and it’s my delight to let Him do it through me.
Thanks for sharing your creativity, in spurring us to share this way.

Ooh, I love this, DiAnn!!! I am creative when I cook, sew, prepare a Sunday School lesson, facilitate a Bible study, write a note of encouragement, paint, color and draw in my Bible, sing, dance, dress myself, figure out what I’m going to make for gifts for various occasions. I LOVE to be creative like my Heavenly Father!

I am creative when I write, when I decorate a room, and when I play and sing with our praise band and choir. I once had a university choir master who said that if you’re not exhausted when you finish a rehearsal, you haven’t worked hard enough. That is true. If you are truly passionate about an activity, you WANT to work hard at it, and you ARE exhausted – but in a good way. 🙂

My husband works hard so that I can minister to people who need to go to the doctor, who need a meal, a card, need a bill paid. My gift is teaching my Sunday School class. I love to study God’s Word. To give myself a mental change I love to read your novels and other Christian mystery/romances. I know that God is blessing you for using your gifts and talents to entertain us in a great way!!!

I sew crafts for gifts and Church charities. I also have boxes of beads that I turn into jewelry for fun and profit and gifts. I read lots!
