Sunday morning I found my very first strange creature. A huge black spider greeted me beside my shoes. He soon found his way outside my door.

I was very excited to attend church with Rosemary and Dian. The church has three services with over 4,000 people attending each. People stood all around the sanctuary. What a joy to see my African brothers and sisters crowding in to worship God. The music was dynamic–just like home. We sang many of the same songs. The preaching came straight out of the Bible.

Afterwards, Dian announced she wanted to take us to lunch. So there we were eating Italian food in Nairobi! Once we had full tummies, we made our way to a grocery store where Rosemary and I stocked up on plenty of bottled water, nuts, and dried fruit for our time in Sudan. I’d brought power bars and little cans of chicken salad. We were all set for the following morning.

Rosemary had previously acquired the plane tickets into Juba and the visas for Southern Sudan. Unlike the north, the SPLA required a passport and their own Visas for entry into their country. Rosemary gave me my first introduction to Swahili:

  • jambo = hi
  • kwaheri = goodbye
  • asante = thank you
  • asante soma = thank you very much
  • Yesu = Jesus
  • Baba = Father
  • Roho = Holy Spirit
  • bwana asifiwe = Praise the Lord
  • napa = here
  • sawa = okay

The rest of the afternoon was spent with various missionary guests at the Mayfield. I love listening to their stories.
